This module introduces both the wireless and optical propagation environments, the modelling of the corresponding channels as well as their implications on the design and architecture of wireless and optical communications systems. Applicants with an Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject should apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year. Applicants who have not studied the required subjects at Higher Level can apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year. We guarantee an offer of a place in halls of residence to all eligible students who apply by 30 June. For most courses you will need to budget between £10 and £100 for material costs per design project.

Students undertake a placement in year 3 and are responsible for funding travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. These costs vary depending on the location and duration of the placement. Students may receive payment from their placement provider during their placement year. In final year, you will be expected to carry out a significant piece of research on a topic or practical methodology that you have chosen. You will receive support from a supervisor who will guide you in terms of how to carry out your research and will provide feedback to you on at least 2 occasions during the write up stage. Facilities mentioned on this page may not be relevant for every course.

Applicants with grades slightly below these requirements may also be considered for an offer if they have a relevant Bachelors degree, good scores in relevant modules, or relevant work experience. Holders of a Masters degree will be considered for entry to postgraduate research programmes. Students from Germany who have completed the five year Erstes Staatsexamen qualification with a grade point average of 6.5 would be considered for entry onto LLM programmes. This module is taught by a combination of lectures, laboratory exercises and a design assignment. You will gain practical knowledge of digital system design and of digital signal processing in the context of modern systems.

Home Fee Students

Holders of a good Masters degree from a recognised institution will be considered for PhD study on an individual basis. Students with a Masters degree from a recognised university in Japan will be considered for PhD study. For MSc programmes, the Business School will consider holders of three-year degree programmes from recognised institutions in India. Holders of the Licenciado or equivalent Professional Title from a recognised Chilean university will be considered for Postgraduate Diplomas and Masters degrees.

You will additionally focus on combinatorics, which involves the selecting or counting of objects to satisfy certain criteria and deciding when the criteria can be met.
